The present study reports biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using Phyllanthus acidus fruits extract. The synthesized nanoparticles have been characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction study, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Transmission electron microscopic analysis. A comparative study of catalytic activity between AgNPs and AuNPs towards the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol has been performed using NaBH4 as a reducing agent. The result reveals that under similar experimental conditions AuNPs exhibit better catalytic efficiency than AgNPs. The difference in catalytic activity has been explained on the basis of the size of the nanoparticles. Furthermore, the catalyst AuNPs have been used for a simple, eco-friendly, and green procedure for the reduction of the different nitro groups containing Schiff bases to reduce amine Schiff base in the aqueous medium.
