The growing modernization in the field of dentistry, with the appearance of new materials, sophisticated technological resources, in addition to the greater breadth of knowledge about the need to provide oral health care, has led to a significant increase in the number of patients, of different age groups, seeking dental treatment. It is important to consider that, although not frequently occurring, urgency/emergency situations can happen in the office. In this context, the present study aimed at evaluating the most frequent urgency/emergency situations in the dental office through a literature review, to verify the level of knowledge of the dentist in these situations, to highlight the main clinical procedures involved in this topic, the availability of equipment and medications, as well as the capacity of these professionals to act in face of these occurrences. Results: the number of professionals trained to diagnose and act in these situations is still small, syncope was among the most cited occurrences, surgical procedures are in evidence, however, the number of offices with equipment and medications for this purpose is low. Conclusion: The respective findings highlight the need for greater professional training, of its team and better adaptation of the work environment (equipment/medications), providing greater safety to the patient.
