Provides an account of the military formation of Western Union in Europe with reference to the North Atlantic pact. Description of various boards involved in the setting of a permanent defense organization for Great Britain, France, Belgium Holland and Luxembourg; View that the planning organization for Western Europe's defense is very strong but the actual defenses are woefully weak; France is the principal component of the continental part of the Western Union forces; Description of the strength and structure of the armies in France, Holland, Great Britain and Luxembourg; Account of the military strength of the Soviet Union; Suggestion that the primary need under present conditions is to develop a highly mobile land force of the minimum scale necessary to check the Russian spearheads that could infiltrate in the face of air attack. |
