To find the effects of Polygonum cuspidatum on water quality, and the carbon source utilization characteristic of microbial community, this study constructed the ecological floating bed of Polygonum cuspidatum (5% for planting area ratio) in the pond of genetically improved tilapia outside, and assessed the water quality from June to September, 2017. The structure and function of microbial community in water samples of tilapia ponds was analyzed by Biolog technology. The results showed that P. cuspidatum from June to July (during growing period) could effectively reduce the content of TN, TP, Chl.a in water samples of tilapia ponds (P<0.05), but the removal rate of TP in the water sample is not as good as those from August to September (higher temperature period, P<0.05). P. cuspidatum significantly increased AWCD values, McIntosh and Richness (except for September) indexes from July to September (P<0.05) in pond water samples, and which also improved the utilization rate of carbohydrates, amino acids, alcohols by water microbes. P. cuspidatum enhanced carbon source utilization abilities, increased diversity indexes of microbial community in water samples of aquaculture tilapia ponds, which was based on the improvement for water quality of the samples.
