Iron sand is an abundant source of magnetic material found in the coast of Indonesia. Extraction of magnetic material from iron sand was carried out using NaOH to produce a greener ultrasonic process. The optimum conditions for treatment of iron sand were obtained at 20 minutes, NaOH 4 M and at 60 °C with content of Fe2O3 of 77.19% and SiO2 of 6.49%. The FTIR spectra of magnetic material extracted with ultrasonic assistance showed an increase in absorption intensity at 580 cm-1 which was Fe-O bending vibration and a decrease in intensity at 1047-1056 cm−1 which was asymmetric stretching vibration of Si-O-Si. XRD data showed a sharp peak at 2θ 35.569-35.596 which was the spinel phase of Fe3O4 crystals. Magnetite from iron sand belongs to the class of soft magnets shown from VSM data [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
