NO2 sensing characteristics of pure and Au incorporated ZnO nanowire thin films synthesised by facile hydrothermal technique have been systematically investigated. Effect of Au loadings on the sensor performance has been studied to obtain better composition with improved performance. Pure ZnO displayed identical response towards H2S and NO2, while Au incorporation resulted in a highly selective response towards NO2. More specifically, Au incorporated sensor using 1.5 mM Au concentration in the reaction mixture, exhibited highly sensitive and selective response towards NO2 at an operating temperature of 200°C. The sensor shows 6 fold increase in sensor response (SR= 41) towards 10 ppm of NO2. Moreover, sensor responded linearly in the measured concentration range of 1 to 10 ppm with faster response kinetics. The response and recovery times of 73 and 170 sec, respectively were obtained for 10 ppm NO2 exposure. XRD measurements revealed that the preferred growth direction of the nanowires changes after Au incorporation. Attained improved sensitivity, selectivity and faster response kinetics justifies Au as a suitable sensitizer for achieving improved response towards NO2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
