The research results of the effect of small additions of vanadium and nitrogen on the microstructure and mechanical and service properties of high-carbon steels for railway transport are presented. The data on industrial production of metal products from such steels are considered. Medium-carbon bainitic and martensitic steels with a fine structure microalloyed with vanadium and nitrogen have a unique set of properties: a combination of high values of strength, ductility, cold resistance, and endurance under fatigue loading, which will increase the resistance of rails during operation not only at low temperatures, but also under conditions of increased loads, in curves of a small radius and in the event of a risk of thermomechanical damage.
