Knowledge on Basic Life Support among Arts and Science Students.

Abstrakt: Introduction: Basic life support (BLS) is the medical care which is used for victims of life threatening illnesses or injures until they can be given full medical care at hospital. It can be provided by trained medical personnel, including emergency, paramedics and lay persons who have received BLS training. Aim: The study aims to assess the level of knowledge regarding BLS among Arts and Science students, SRM Institute of Science & Technology, Kattankulathur. Methodology: Non experimental descriptive research design was adopted to assess the knowledge regarding BLS among Arts and Science students at SRM Institute of Science & Technology. 120 students who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were selected by using non probability convenient sampling technique. Structured questionnaires were used to assess the demographic variables and knowledge on BLS among students. Results: The analysis revealed that, majority 107(89%) of students had inadequate knowledge regarding BLS, 13(11%) of students had moderately adequate knowledge and no one had adequate knowledge about BLS. The study results revealed that, there was no significant association found between the level of knowledge regarding BLS among Arts and Science students with demographic variables . Conclusion: The present study concludes that, majority 89% of Arts and Science students had inadequate knowledge regarding BLS and no one had adequate knowledge about BLS. Since BLS is an important life saving techniques, teaching programme can be planned on BLS for Arts and Science students. Thereby their knowledge on BLS can be improved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
