Thinking about the future of composites manufacturing and the integration of automation and robotics, this article represents the foundational digital workflow and data architecture moving composites manufacturing, specifically automated fiber placement, towards a new paradigm. The article introduces the history and evolution of automated fiber placement (AFP). Subsequently, the article details the work on categorization of manufacturing defects, their assessment and viewpoint modeling. Further details on how to enact a new digital workflow for successful and intelligent integration of automation within the complete lifecycle, encompassing design, process planning, manufacturing, and inspection are covered extensively. Additional discussion creates the data parallel model for the physics and based on that will serve as architecture to integrate the cycle presented in previous coverage. It makes the argument to integrate data driven techniques to complement the shortcomings of physics-based ones. Finally, the article introduces the future factories, or industries of the future, laboratory at the University of South Carolina where technology is being put into actual practice with the integration of a cyber-physical system defining the neXt vision of how manufacturing should look.
