Abstrakt: The condition of communal open spaces in public residential estates can be a restriction for well-being of the residents if it does not support developing lifestyles. This study examined the users' assessment of the condition of communal open spaces in public residential estates in Abeokuta, Ogun State Nigeria. It employed a systematic sampling method in selecting 439 housing units from 876 housing units in four randomly selected estates for questionnaire administration, namely; Asero (105 units), Laderin (154 units), Olomore (126 units) and Sam Ewang (54 units). However, 399 copies of the questionnaire representing 90.9 percent were retrieved. The study found that the communal open spaces in the four estates are in fair condition with mean index of 3.29, 3.14, 3.09, and 3.12 for Laderin, Sam Ewang, Olomore, and Asero, respectively. The outcome of this study could strengthen the stakeholders in charge of public housing estates to formulate policies that will prioritize the inclusion of functional communal open spaces in design of residential buildings with a view to aiding social interaction among residents.
