Fake braces are an artificial orthodontic appliance commonly worn by teenagers and young adults for gaining popularity in Malaysian scenario. It is practiced by illegal practitioners with questionable quality and standard with regards to instrumentation and materials used. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the microstructure and pH changes of fake braces in simulated body fluid (SBF). Five different types of fake braces and one control were immersed in SBF at 37 °C. pH values of each sample were recorded at days 0, 7, 14 and 28. The morphological changes of the braces were subjected to scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer at the same time intervals. Data were analysed using One-way ANOVA with post-hoc Bonferroni with p<0.05 considered as statistically significant. After immersion in SBF, there was significant difference in pH values between fake archwire type 1 and type 4 at day 14, and between fake bracket type 5 and control at day 28. Morphological changes were observed on the surface of these fake braces when compared to control where at day 28 granular and unpolished surface were present on the fake braces as observed based on SEM analysis. This warrant for further study in assessing the ion leaching from fake braces into oral environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
