This article draws on data collected for the project Transforming Learning Cultures in Further Education, which forms part of the Economic and Social Research Council's Teaching and Learning Research Programme. It focuses on the vocational aspirations of young people taking two advanced level 2-year vocational courses in the same English further education college - a Business and Technology Education Council National Diploma in Health Studies, and an Advanced Vocational Certificate in Education in Travel and Tourism. The complex inter-relationship between these students' shifting vocational aspirations and their experiences both within their courses and in the world outside is explored. This complexity is contrasted with policy makers' technical-rational view of the linear progression of vocational choices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
