Abstrakt: The article reports on the factors that influenced the election results in Turkey. The drama of the election lies in the fact that the Turks were given a free and honest election by the very government which maintained, until 1945, a one-party system, and scrapped all but five of the political parties it had licensed since that date. Many factors combined to give Turkey a free election at this time. High cost of living, a chaotic economy, and popular resentment against repression by an incompetent government bureaucracy, formed the psychological, economic and political backdrop for the elections. Although the U.S. had probably no party preference in Turkey, and used no evident pressure, President Ismet Inonu of Turkey was left in no doubt that the U.S. wished the Turks to be given full opportunity to exercise their franchise freely.
