The article focuses on the U.S. foreign policy. The American spirit is hardening in world affairs, although we have played the role of leading power for just ten years. it is part of the trend away from a ceases less renewal and reaffirmation of our values and toward a servile and sterile worship of institutions and the status quo that frightened the men who edited this magazine 35 years ago. This trend is conservatism. It can be overcome only if it is brought into the open and countered in the arena of debate by positive and vigorous liberalism. Unless that clear choice is presented to the American people the functioning of the democratic process, through which democracy thrives, is atrophied. |
