Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease. Attaching to the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract and conjunctiva of susceptible organisms, the virus causes systemic as well as visual manifestations. The complications of the disease often lead to malnutrition, pneumonia, middle ear inflammation, and even brain damage. Purpose: To present a clinical case of measles keratitis in a child with a history of regular immunization for the disease and to discuss the available data on epidemiological prevalence and the therapeutic approach. Methods: Medical records were used from a systematic examination of a 9-year-old child and а Reverse transcription Polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test of a nasopharyngeal secret to confirm the diagnosis of measles. A complete ophthalmologic examination was performed to determine the ocular changes that occurred as a result of the systemic disease. Results: Five days after the onset of the systemic manifestations of measles, the child complains of severe eye irritation. Ophthalmologic examination was performed with the diagnosis of superficial punctate keratopathy in the central zone of the cornea with small subepithelial infiltrations. After ten days of combined topical therapy, complete reversal of the identified lesions was observed. Conclusion: A rare case of ocular manifestation of measles is presented, as well as our experience of therapeutic behavior with complete healing result. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
