If Washington seems finally to have bowed to the demand of a public debate on Vietnam, there is still no sign that responsible officials want to talk seriously about China. More than sixteen years have passed since the Communist armies entered Peking in triumph and the war-weary Chinese placed their fortunes in the hands of the veterans from the hills and caves of Yenan. During this interval the Chinese population has grown at an estimated rate of 12 to 15 million each year or by a total not much less than the present population of the United States. |
