This article presents information about the defense policy adopted by the French government to protect its western borders. France, by tradition, geographical position and population, is the main factor in the defense of Western Europe. The experience of 1940 has made the French acutely sensitive to the need of using their own resources to provide their troops with adequate air cover. Although such a policy may not be as economical as a division of roles, it is justified on psychological grounds. The problem, as General Matt de Blanc emphasized, is to check the advance of a mass of Russian tanks backed by a massive air force. |
