The present study deals with the antibacterial activity and phytochemical analysis of fruit extract of Rhus semialata. Antibacterial activity was carried on four human pathogenic bacteria viz., Vibrio cholerae, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus using agar well diffusion method and it was compared with three standard antibiotics doxycycline, azithromycin and tetracycline. Three different organic solvents viz., diethyl ether, ethyl acetate and methanol were used for extraction. It was observed that among different solvents, significant antimicrobial activity of fruits of R. semialata was observed in methanol extract against V. cholerae as compared to standard antibiotic tetracycline and P. aeruginosa as compared to standard antibiotics doxycycline, azithromycin and tetracycline, in ethyl acetate extract against E. coli as compared to standard antibiotics azithromycin and tetracycline and P. aeruginosa as compared to standard antibiotic azithromycin and in diethyl ether extract against S. aureus as compared to standard antibiotic tetracycline. Study also revealed that both gram positive and gram negative bacteria were found to be sensitive to fruit extracts of R. semialata. Hence, R. semialata spp. can be a good alternative and economically potent medicine against diarrhea/ gastrointestinal disease and respiratory tract infections caused by gram negative bacteria V. Cholerae, E. coli and P. aeruginosa and gram positive bacterium S. aureus. Phytochemical analysis of the aqueous fruit extract revealed the presence of tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids, quinone, terpenoids and phenols. The occurrence of these biologically active chemicals in the selected plant may justify their wide usage in traditional medicine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
