This research explores energy communities (EC) and their business models' attributes. We develop a conceptual framework that combines and extends the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of value generation (Bocken, 2014) to include the technological (Chesbrough, 2010) and legal dimensions. These two additional dimensions have been considered only implicitly in previous energy studies. Using secondary data, the paper applies the extended framework to forty business cases of energy communities allowing us to identify six business model (BM) archetypes representing ECs. Such an extended framework can encourage and support new ventures in the energy sector to assess different business strategies while complying with legal and regulatory requirements.
