Brazil has one of the highest rates of caesarean sections in the world and, in spite of definite regional differences in their magnitude; the increase has been a nationwide phenomenon. Risks and safety of caesarean birth differ from place to place in the world and it has been postulated that as the relative safety of the procedure is an important factor contributing to the rise of caesarean birth, the fact that this has only been achieved in some parts of the world should restrict the indications to perform the operation in the best interests of pregnant women. A study was conducted to investigate the effect of social inequalities in caesarean section rates in primiparous women in southern Brazil. |
