Although a plethora of studies has been recently conducted on smartphone use and addiction, much less is known about the positive and adverse outcomes of smartphones and under what conditions these effects occur. The objective of this research is to fill this gap by investigating both the bright (i.e., affordances) and the dark (i.e., constraints) sides of smartphones and their effects on performance and under what conditions these effects occur through the lens of the technology affordances and constraints theory.
