Abstrakt: In this article, changing patterns of residency and business strategy of members of the German merchant community in eighteenth-century Venice are analyzed. In this century, many Germans decided to settle permanently in Venice and at the same time to loosen the hitherto tight bonds of their German merchant nation. Due to these changes, the German merchants were able to enlarge their range of business partnerships all over Europe and the Levant. By doing so, this increasingly cosmopolitan group contributed substantially to the increasing integration of Venice into the Central and North European business world. Studying the German merchant colony in eighteenth-century Venice thus sheds light on fundamental mechanisms of long-distance trade and the actors that mainly organized and profited from it.
