【Background】 Exposure to mild hyperbaric oxygen (mHBO) increases blood oxygenation by dissolving oxygen into the blood plasma. 【Objective】 This research is an attempt to provide insight into the responses of exposure to mHBO on microcirculation in peripheral tissues and metabolic rate in healthy subjects. 【Methods】 Fifteen healthy individuals were exposed to normobaric (1.00 ATA, 20.9% oxygen) and mHBO (1.4 ATA, 30.8% - 39.5% oxygen) conditions in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber for 70 minutes. Peripheral capillary oxygen saturation (SpO2), blood flow in capillaries of the nailfold and skin, heart rate and resting metabolic rate during both exposures were measured. This study was approved by the ethical committee of Kobe University Graduate School of Health Sciences and the authors declare no conflict of interest. 【Results】Mean age and body mass index of study participants was 24.6 ± 4.9 years old and 20.5 ± 2.7, respectively. Temperature and relative humidity inside the chamber were 24 ± 1°C and 40-55%, respectively. The value of SpO2 was increased from 97.6% to 99.5% after exposure to mild hyperbaric oxygen although that was unchanged after exposure to the normobaric condition. Mean blood velocity in capillaries in the finger nailfold was almost same after exposure to normobaric condition. Whereas, mean blood velocity in capillaries was increased from 92μm/s to 126μm/s after exposure to mHBO. In addition, the blood flow in the skin was increased from 52ml/min to 69ml/min after exposure to mHBO. The metabolic rate was also increased by 1,031 kcal to 1,146 kcal after exposure to the mHBO. Furthermore, the heart rate was decreased from 70 beats/min to 60 beats/min after exposure to the mHBO. 【Conclusion】 The results of the present study show that exposure to mHBO condition is effective for healthy people in the microcirculation of peripheral tissues and whole-body metabolism.
