The potential ability of nine sunscreen preparations to prevent erythema was assessed by two commonly used in vitro methods--the thin-film technique and the dilute--solution method-as well as by a new in vitro method--the hairless mouse procedure. The study indicates that there are serious deficiencies in these first two methods when their results are compared to those obtained from in vivo testing. These two spectrophotometric methods predicted a much higher degree of effectiveness than was obtained under in-use conditions. The new in vitro method described here that uses the excised epidermis of the hairless mouse gave results comparable to those obtained in human volunteers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
