Abstrakt: In order to optimize the local mineral resources of laterites in Indonesia, the nickel element which contained in laterite minerals is expected to be an added value in steel alloys. Austenitic manganese steel is one of the most widely used steels in industries, for instance as rock crusher in the mineral and mining industries. This due to its excellent wear resistance and high toughness. In this preliminary study, austenitic manganese steel was developed based on laterite by modified ASTM A128 for jaw crusher plate application. This done by adding nickel and molybdenum while reducing manganese in the alloys. The modified alloys (FeNiMn steels) is then subjected to solution annealing treatment with two-step heating method, starts at a temperature of 700 ℃ for 3 hours and raised to a temperature of 1000 ℃ with various soaking time followed by rapid cooling in water. The effect of the solution treatment method on the microstructure was observed and the hardness was measured to determine the characteristics of the modified FeNiMn steels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
