In this paper it is investigated the influence of the temperature-corrosion-torsion affecting factors on the shape of a three-dimensional (3-D) hexagonal toroid with regular hexagonal cross-section used in manufacturing of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage tanks from the automotive industry. A design strategy was proposed to determine based on the finite element method, the change of the torsion angle, temperature and corrosion factors during operation. Numerical simulations were applied to compute the optimum form and sizing of the storage tank based on an objective optimization function to minimize the storage tank mass. The proposed method is demonstrated and numerical tested, demonstrating the potential of the suggested approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
