Abstrakt: Autoimmune thyroid diseases are inflammatory disorders of the thyroid gland and can be divided according to thyroid function. A general histological feature is the lymphocytic infiltration forming lymphoid follicles with active germinal centres and infiltration of plasma cells. The ultrastructure of the germinal centres is similar to that seen in lymphatic organs. In autoimmune thyrotoxicosis the thyroid follicles show epithelial hyperplasia, while the lesions in autoimmune myxoedema are characterized by fibrosis and destruction in the epithelial cells.
