This article focuses on how all animals who have hair, have a "hair cycle." This cycle is divided into three phases; growth, transition and quiescence. In these phases, a new hair, destined to be substituted for an old hair, develops and undergoes differentiation before going into a resting stage and final shedding. Replacement of hair in some animals may occur annually or seasonally; this may involve all the follicles of one region or of the whole skin. In many animals the outer sheath of growing follicles contains active and/or inactive melanocytes. |
