In aquaculture system, the major item of expenditure is feed which is about 50% of total cost involved. Only 20-30% of the feed used in aquaculture is being assimilated by culture animal and remaining accumulates as a waste. The accumulated waste includes NH4+-N and/or NO2-N, which are toxic to the culture animals in a closed system. These toxic wastes can be effectively converted into useful nutrients by producing microorganisms by manipulation of carbon and nitrogen ratio (C/N) with biofloc technology. Biofloc systems exposed to natural light include outdoor, lined ponds or tanks for the culture of shrimp or tilapia. A complex mixture of algal and bacterial processes control water quality in such "greenwater" biofloc systems. Most biofloc systems in commercial use are greenwater. However, some biofloc systems have been installed in closed buildings with no exposure to natural light. These systems are operated as "brown- water" biofloc systems, where only bacterial processes control water quality. Biofloc technology is an innovation that has applied in aquaculture to reduce feed cost and ammonia in the system by recycling the nutrients, leftover feed and fish wastes. Reports of earlier research revealed that, the microbes developed in biofloc system plays an important role in improving water quality than control (pH 7.6-7.8, Alkalinity 138.68-153.52, DO : 5.6-7.39, NH4 0.24-0.50, NO2-N 0.63-.93, NO3-N 2.09-2.56), reduces feed conversion ratio [FCR: M. japonicas 1.67(BFT) 1.8 (control)], reduces dietary protein level (Nile tilapia (80-120g) 24%, F. paulensis 35%) and ultimately contributes for the growth of cultured animal.
