The fishes belongs to the family Siganidae are popularly known as rabbit fishes and distributed throughout Indo- Pacific region. Rabbit fishes are considered as candidate species for mariculture due to its fast growth. Rabbit fish, Siganus canaliculatus is a marine fish inhabits coastal areas and brackishwater bodies. Knowledge on gut content is essential to attempt culture possibilities of this species. In the present study, an attempt is made to analyse gut content of this species along the Ratnagiri coast. Fishes were collected from Mirkarwada landing centre of Ratnagiri during the year 2014-16. Analysis of gut content revealed that S. canaliculatus is a herbivorous fish mainly feeding on algae (Enteromorpha spp. and sea weeds) during most part of year along Ratnagiri coast. An accidental inclusions of benthic invertebrates like echinoderms, crustaceans and bivalves were found in some large sized fish. Majority of mature fish occurred with empty stomachs or with little food during active spawning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
