Samuel Štefan Osuský (1888-1975) was a renowned Slovak philosopher and theologian who lived and worked during the difficult times of two world wars and two totalitarian regimes that affected Czechoslovakia in the 20th century. The article presents his thoughts and prophetic insights regarding on topics such as the relationship of religion and war and the dangers of Fascism, Nazism/Hitlerism, and Communism/Bolshevism as pseudo-religious ideologies. He also foresaw the dangers of the naturalistic tendencies within the modern sciences (including the behavioral sciences and humanities) and encouraged Christian intellectuals to return to a meaningful engagement in and with the society to recover the notion that there are important religious sources for human flourishing. His legacy, therefore, remains relevant today as we struggle with a crisis of democracy in the West. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
