Johns Hopkins University ($1.8 billion forfinancial aid for low- and middle-incomestudents); and arts, education, environment,public health, and programs aimedat improving city governments around theworld ($1.5 billion)The founder of the Bloombergfinancial-news company andformer New York mayor donatedmore last year than he ever has inthe 15 times he has appeared onthe Philanthropy 50. Among their smaller donationslast year was a $1.5 million gift toSustainable Ocean Alliance, anorganization that is working to developsolutions to protect and cleanthe world's oceans, and donationsto charities fighting homelessnessin the Bay Area, education groups,health care programs, and environmentalnonprofits.
