As a specialist bird zoo focused on the conservation of the extremely threatened Atlantic Rainforest in Brazil, Parque das Aves has developed a broad range of conservation and educational programs, in order to tackle the trafficking of parrots, including the Red-browed Amazon (Amazona rhodocorytha). The "Chauá Guardians" is a community-focused citizen science project aimed to curb the capture of parrot chicks in the Águas Formosas region of Minas Gerais, Brazil, through engaging families and teachers, using the Red-browed Amazon as an umbrella species. A recent study of citizen science projects found that there is a tendency for open calls for volunteer participation in citizen science to draw an audience profile that is already highly engaged with science and nature. By drawing participants into nature with the purpose of monitoring parrots that live in the area, we overcame existing barriers to positive engagement. The process of learning skills of scientific monitoring of parrots was based on communication on biodiversity and emotional connection to nature. We focused on two social groups - teenagers and adults from the community, and teachers. The project took place from May to November 2018 and had five steps: i) Teacher Training Program for 30 teachers; ii) Chauá Guardians Training Program for 30 teenagers; iii) Special talks with youths and adults from three rural community, totalling 20 people; iv) field activities and datacollection about the species that live in the region involving teenagers, youths and teachers; and v) Bio-blitz activity with all the community of Águas Formosas aimed to share the results and achievements of the educational process. The effectiveness of the project was underpinned by formative evaluation to inform project design and feedback surveys conducted by the team of Parque das Aves and the Institute for Methods Innovation. We conducted qualitative interviews and surveys with open-ended questions to identify interests, concerns and motivations relevant to the design of the citizen science activities and conducted mixed methods feedback surveys with the teenagers and teachers.
