Tau is the principal component of paired helical filaments that form neurofibrillary tangles in Alzheimer's disease. These neurofibrillary tangles accumulate in cell bodies of dying neurons and glial cells and accordingly their abundance correlates positively with the severity of cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease patients. The role of tau in Alzheimer's disease neurodegeneration has dementia with parkinsonism linked to chromosome neuronal functions. Still, the relationship of tangle formation to cell death is not understood. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] |
