The normalisation of blood pressure is the most important measure in order to improve mortality and morbidity of the hypertensive diabetic patient and this holds particularly true for the diabetic with nephropathy. Early and "aggressive" lowering of blood pressure retards the progression of renal insufficiency and this postpones the occurrence of terminal renal failure by several years! In the patient with nephropathy blood pressure should be lowered to values below 130/180mm hg and even lower, if there are no adverse effects. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] |
