In this work, α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) were produced by thermal decomposition of a new precursor complex, [Fe(Ofloxacin)2Cl2], at 600 °C under air atmosphere for 2 h. This is a nontoxic, biocompatible and simple method for preparation of α-Fe2O3 NPs, which increases the photocatalytic activity of NPs. The complex and its decomposition products were identified by elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, UV–Vis spectroscopy, molar conductivity, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The photocatalytic activity of α-Fe2O3 NPs was separately investigated on the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye and ciprofloxacin (CF) antibiotic at room temperature in water by sono–photo Fenton processes. The results showed that α-Fe2O3 NPs have great potential as photocatalyst under UV light. The degradation percentages of MB and CF under UV light irradiation in the presence of hydrogen peroxide using the low catalyst loading (0.16 g L−1) were about 84 and 59%, respectively.
