Blastocystis hominis is a parasitic eukaryotic organism, single-celled, anaerobic living in the intestines and related to gastrointestinal disorders such inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), chronic diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The cross sectional study was conducted on 249 patients with gastrointestinal disorders and some of healthy persons, who attended to the Kirkuk General Hospital and Children’s Hospital in Kirkuk city, Iraq, from 1 August 2018 until 30 December 2018. This study is designed to determine the effect of Blastocystis hominis infection on hematological parameters and on levels of each of interleukin-10 ( IL-10) and interleukin-18(IL-18), to help the diagnosis of the parasite microscopically was used Modified Ziehel – Neelsen stain. It was found that the proportion of patients with Blastocystis hominis 36.9%. The result shows a significant increase in the total count of white blood cells (WBCs), neutrophils, monocytes (p < 0.01), while there was a slight decrease in the count of lymphocytes and hemoglobin ratio. There was a significant increase in the concentration of IL-18 and there is approximatedincrease in the concentration of IL-10 in the serum of patients with B. hominis compared with control group. The study concluded that the infection with B. hominis has an effect on the hematological parameters and immunological parameters especially Proinflammatory cytokines and that the use of permanent stains is a good way to help in diagnosis the parasite microscopically.
