In order to gain insights into the responsive characteristics of the antioxidant systems of shrimp during viral infection, in the present study, Fenneropenaeus chinensis "vaccinated" with inactivated white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) and the control were challenged by WSSV, then total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and the activities of 4 antioxidant enzymes in the hepatopancreas, stomach, gills, plasma, and hemocytes were examined and compared. The results showed that after WSSV challenge, T-AOC and the activities of the antioxidant enzymes in all the tested tissues of the "vaccinated" shrimp kept increasing for a longer time and reached significantly higher values (p < 0.05); the survival rates of this group remained higher too (p < 0.05); furthermore, the values of the same parameters varied in different tissues, indicating tissue-specific responses of the antioxidant systems. This study revealed that "vaccination" should account for enhanced antioxidant responses, which were somewhat pathogen-specific but well coordinated in shrimp protection; it will also be helpful for further exploring the action mechanisms of antioxidant systems in the shrimp immunity.
