The article deals with the problem of developing a public mission of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in the context of the dichotomy of the Ajornamento and the Eastern Byzantine model of social service. The author analyzes the process of creating the social doctrine of the UGCC, identifying its chronological stages. It is noted that, by the nature of its social service, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church occupies a prominent position among the Eastern Catholic Churches and Churches of the Byzantine tradition. It preserves the liturgical tradition of the Orthodox churches, which unites it with the historical tradition of Christianity in Ukraine and makes it the national church of the Ukrainian people. At the same time, as part of the Ecumenical Church, it is open to such features as the modernization of dogma, and the reproduction of social concepts that are the basis of the social state and advanced society of the present, active activities aimed at positive transformation of society. This was clearly reflected in the activities of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky. Historically, the idea of social doctrine of the Catholic Horse Church has been influenced by the process of creating the social doctrine of the UGCC. XIX - beginning. Twentieth century, outlined in the encyclical “Rerum Novarum”. The social doctrine of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, elaborated by Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, met the socio-economic and political conditions and needs of the development of Western Ukrainian society of this historical time. During the Soviet period, the UGCC remained a persecuted church, which secured its special place in society. It was linked to the dissident movement, and proved to be the center of religious and spiritual life, unrelated to the loyalty relationship and cooperation with the Soviet regime. At the same time, the period of prohibition and persecution created a gap in the inheritance of the social doctrine of the church, the creation of which in its modern form takes place at the turn of the 1990s - 2000s in accordance with the conditions of post-Soviet society. In the present-day Ukrainian state, the UGCC has reproduced a position independent of the influences of political players, state authorities and big business of moral authority, which was clearly manifested in the activities of its leader, Lubomir Husar. The Church is the initiator and is active in community initiatives. The modern conception of symphony in church-society relations implies its independence from the influence of political players and aggressive ideologies, and ensuring a true unity in social relations. This position is emphasized by the fact that the public importance of the UGCC is gaining national significance. The independence of the UGCC, its exclusion from state power, moral authority, and its commitment to interact with society contrast with the Byzantine tradition of “symphony” of secular and spiritual power, and with the practice of Orthodox denominations.
