Abstrakt: Patients usually require anesthesia for biopsy or excision of superficial skin lesions. Local anesthesia is ideal because it is easily administered, rapidly effective and inexpensive. Local anesthesia also does not affect the patient's coordination or ability to think. Lidocaine is a local anesthetic suitable for short, superficial procedures. Procaine is another local anesthetic with a rapid onset. Procaine is both less potent and less toxic than lidocaine. Procaine has an ester linkage while lidocaine has an amide linkage. If a patient reports allergy to one type, the other usually can be injected safely.
