Offering effective intervention to young people with anorexia nervosa (AN) is a priority within our National Health Service (NHS). Treatment guidelines recommend services should consider including multi-family therapy (MFT) in treatment pathways for young people with AN. MFT is theorized to change how families emotionally and behaviorally respond to the AN; however there is limited empirical understanding of how it may create this change. Following a pilot MFT group, this study conducted focus groups with carers and clinicians to gather their perspectives of how MFT creates change and how MFT adds to existing treatment pathways. Participants reported that unique activities and therapeutic processes within MFT improve relationships betweenfamilies and services, change how carers respond to the AN, and create a shared understanding of AN. Attending treatment with other families enhances parental confidence, shifts feelings of guilt and blame, promotes hope, and challenges the way families understand and manage AN.
