Abstrakt: This article presents information on a study which explored the historical perspective on technology and its relationship to group work. With the coming of the 21st century, new technologies are creating numerous opportunities and challenges for group specialists as they work to build community. This potential paradigm shift raises a startling number of questions and issues of concern for group work specialists. The coming controversy surrounding technology will focus on whether group work can, or should, be reconceptualized to include technological advances. The challenge for group work specialists is to wisely decide how to take advantage of the new abilities technology affords both clients and the profession, while maintaining the integrity of the profession to promote meaningful, personal interrelationships necessary to true community. Group work applications of technology were primarily limited to practitioner-to-practitioner interactions such as e-mail communication for sharing of information and resources or conducting business or networking.
