Abstrakt: Processes of grinding and modification of commercial alumina powders were investigated. It is observed that after calcination at 1100 °C alumina stabilized zirconia is a powder with a high surface area, but after grinding and calcination at 1100 °C it changes its crystal structure from gamma-phase to corundum. This phase transition dramatically decreases the specific surface area of the powder. Lanthanum oxide stabilized alumina changes its crystal structure, increasing the amount of lanthanum aluminate phase after grinding and calcination at 1100 °C compared to sample that was only calcined, but these phases transition do not influence the specific surface area values. Modification during the technological process impedes alumina phases transitions. In the case of zirconia stabilized alumina, modifiers do not form their own phases and the specific surface area values increase. In the case of lanthanum oxide stabilized alumina, modifiers form their own phases and these processes do not influence its specific surface area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
