The effect of shock waves in bcc crystals have been studied by means of molecular dynamics simulations. The interaction between the atoms is modelled by Dzugutov potentials [M. Dzugutov, J. Non-Cryst. Sol. 131 (1991) 62]. Depending on the strength of the shock wave and the propagation direction different phase transition processes have been observed, leading to perfect and defective close-packed phases. Elastically-dispersive and plastic wave fronts accompany the expanding shock waves. If the propagation is along the three-fold direction additional solitary waves are observed. At elevated temperatures and increased cross-sections the solitary waves get damped. The conditions for the occurance of solitary waves will be discussed. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
