This article focuses on the book "The Life of John Ericsson," by William Conant Church. John Ericsson was born July 31, 1803, at Longbanshyttan, in the mining district of Nordmark in Sweden. John made remarkable progress in mechanical drawing, and, with his brother Nils, was finally appointed a cadet in the mechanical corps of the Swedish Navy. His fertility of invention showed itself in a number of contrivances. Ericsson again took up his plans for hot-air engines. He made great advances in theory and practice, and decided to apply the principle to a large vessel. |
