This exploratory study used qualitative techniques to investigate participation in lay health home visitation among low-income mothers. While some women were concerned about issues such as confidentiality and the possibility of intrusiveness of the health visitor, women agreed that incentives for enrollment included enhanced access to medical assistance, the need for emotional support and the receipt of necessary informational materials and mother and child supplies. Key factors that influenced continued participation were — the mother-to-mother relationship, receipt of emotional support, perceived competence of the lay health visitor and her availability and accessibility. Although not directly named during these focus groups, the benefit of a humanized, patient-focused health system was a distinctive common theme of all discussions. This study confirmed findings in other settings, which suggest that provider characteristics are important indications of service utilization and satisfaction. |
