The oxidation behavior of magnetron sputtered Ti1–xAlxN/Ti1–xAlx multilayers subjected to thermal annealing in air at 1173 K was studied in comparison with monolithic Ti1–xAlxN coatings. It was shown that the oxidation resistance of the multilayers can be substantially improved by means of optimization of their architecture providing the optimal thickness ratio of the ceramic layers and metallic interlayers. The improved protective properties of the Ti0.45Al0.55N/Ti0.45Al0.55 multilayers were found to be due to the effect of Ti0.45Al0.55 interlayers on the interdiffusion of atomic species and growth kinetics of oxide scale that substantially decreases the rate of diffusion-controlled oxidation of the coatings.
