Choice of wound dressing is often irrational, being determined by past experience without knowledge of the principles of wound healing. The Egyptians used dressings of papyrus and linen, but suppuration of open wounds was encouraged by Hippocrates' humoral theory of disease that dominated for many centuries. The concept of a dressing providing an optimal healing environment arose when in 1958 epithelialization of experimental blister wounds was shown to be faster when the blister roof was left intact. |
