Abstrakt: The rare association of pancreatic disease and nodular fat necrosis, also known as subcutaneous fat necrosis and pancreatic panniculitis, was described as early as 1883. The mechanisms implicated in the etiology of pancreatitis in lupus include vasculitis with ischemia, autoimmune phenomena and steroid or other toxic drug effects. Corticosteroids have been considered as both a cause of and as therapy for acute pancreatitis. Pancreatitis in lupus patients on steroids is not uncommon, occurring in approximately 8.2 percent of cases. Patients with pancreatic panniculitis typically present with severe abdominal pain and arthralgias; however, the underlying pancreatic disease may be asymptomatic.
