The dermatologist has to face itch every day, although knowing very little about it. Both in physiology and in clinical practice, itch appears connected to pain. In the 1950s and early 1960s, the relationship between pain and itch was exhaustively covered. Itch and pruritus are unpleasant sensory experiences defined as "to have an uneasy sensation of the skin that inclines the person to scratch the part affected." Both itch and pain sensations are considered the result of activation of free nerve endings at the dermo-epidermal junction. |
